My home is old and dated. One of the hardest things to navigate in this split level home has been not having a decent mudroom drop zone where my kids can dump their items. So I set out to create an organized and function entryway with the space I’ve got! Below I’ll share a few ideas for functional additions you can make to add organization to small or narrow entryways.
Tip 1: Add shelving
Here I added a long floating shelf to create both storage and style in this narrow space. Try going with floating vs. brackets to avoid adding bulk to the space. Floating shelves are typically less bulky than many shelving systems and are easily customizable to fit your space. For installation I added 1×2 boards all across the back and side walls and then set the shelf on top. If you don’t have side walls for support, floating shelf brackets like these are a really great option.
Tip 2: Install hooks
Hooks are a really great way to make a narrow space more functional. They take up absolutely no floorspace and add a ton of vertical storage. I absolutely love this Reed Geometric modern hook from National Hardware. This style hook comes in several colors but the matte black with copper accents is modern, classic, are stunning! I also love that it is essentially two hooks in one so we can hang bags and coats all from one hook. These hooks are also crazy easy to install with just two screws, plus or minus wall anchors which are included in the hardware kit. Adding these hooks to your entryway is by far the fastest way to increase storage and organization in a narrow space.
Tip 3: Add storage baskets.
Baskets are a great way to hide clutter and also create more storage than just shelving alone. In my newly updated narrow entryway, I added baskets on the floor and shelving. Floor baskets are great for bulky things like shoe storage. Smaller baskets up on shelving is great for other less frequently used items like gloves, hats, and scarves. I also love that is adds style and texture alone with storage. Win win!
Organized Entryway
So, like I said before…narrow entryways can be tricky to design and make functional, but with a little creativity and a few extra additions, you can have both a beautiful and organized entryway drop zone!
